The SENTINELS series claims a lineage of my choice that I trace from Old Masters or ‘Unknown Artists and Craftspeople’ (dixit G. Perry), creating my own pedigree. The work starts with drawing in museums around the world to absorb some of my selected precursors’ brilliance, idiosyncrasies - and at times flaws. I then redirect these drawings to address the preoccupations of my work and find solutions. Back in the studio large figures emerge on long scrolls of paper, each being a composite of elements from the smaller drawings and bridging time, history, geography and ethnicity.
