When emptying my aunt’s flat after her death I discovered a drawer full of buttons, ribbons, curtains rings and a multitude of obsolete haberdashery items. My aunt had lived through two European wars; she knew the value of keeping everything for a bad day. The drawer was magnificent, witnessing a ceaseless meticulous and solitary gathering throughout her life powered by fear and her experience of hardship. The work is a tender homage to her courage and dignity.
